Marataba Mountain Lodge
Focus: New Build
Marataba Mountain Lodge was one of the most memorable projects I’ve worked on creating a one-of-a-kind walking lodge deep in the mountains of Marakele National Park. As Group General Manager, I was involved from the ground up: identifying the site, managing environmental and local authority approvals, assembling the professional team, and overseeing the build and budget.
Locating the site for the build took time and exploration. It meant traversing the valleys of riverine bushveld within a Big Five reserve. The effort was well worth it: we found a site that offered spectacular views, seclusion, and an authentic sense of place.
Project Highlights:
Built a completely new lodge designed for walking safaris.
Secured all environmental and local authority approvals.
Delivered a low-impact, high-experience architectural design.
Managed a remote build with limited access and infrastructure.
Opened in 2015, marking a significant addition to the Marataba portfolio.
Challenges:
The remoteness of the site presented several logistical challenges. Contractor access was limited to a jeep track, and in many instances materials had to be carried by hand to the individual room locations. This project required continuous problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork - but it’s those very challenges that made the finished lodge so special.
